I believe this is an excellent organization that provides a great opportunity for battered women to escape the cycle of violence and abuse. Education is critical for both them and their families.
Battered Women Scholarship program for abuse survivors now a nonprofit
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Women's Independence Scholarship Program, Inc., which the mission of reducing the effects of domestic violence by offering access to higher education, began operating as a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization on July 1.
Known as WISP, the program began as part of The Sunshine Lady Foundation in 1999 and has provided over $16 million in scholarships to more than 2,000 women survivors of intimate partner abuse.
Doris Buffett, founder and president of The Sunshine Lady Foundation, announced in December 2007 her intention to endow WISP as an independent nonprofit.
